Career Development

Career development can be identified as a key function of HRM and it is the process of shaping employees’ career for the betterment of their life. Career development involves with developing employees’ knowledge, skills and attitudes during their lifetime along with different occupations (Armstrong, 2013). Career development aims to develop individuals with sufficient skills and competencies to confront different occupations throughout an individual’s career life. Career development helps to develop individuals both professionally and individually. It enhances individual satisfaction during their career life and organizational support and guidance is essential for developing once career (Herr, 2001).

Ladders of Career Development

§    Self-assessment – The foremost step of career development is to evaluate needed skills and competencies by individuals themselves because they know their skill level and capacity well.

§   Career awareness - Here, individuals need to identify different career paths based on their skills and competencies.

§    Setting goals – Goal setting should be done by both employee and employer collectively to achieve desired outcomes.

§    Skill training – After setting career goals, skill training should be provided for individuals.

§    Performing – At the final stage, organization should assign particular task for employees to perform to evaluate their progression and develop career path (Hoekstra, 2011).

Main Areas of Career Development

Career development should be focused on different aspects that goes beyond the traditional skill development within individuals. It is crucial to develop unique skills within employees to confront any workplace or occupation during their career (Armstrong, 2013).

§  Communication skills – It is crucial to develop employee’ communication and inter personnel skills for confronting different job roles during their career life. Effective communication is essential for the success of any workplace.

§     Decision making – Decision making competencies should be developed within each employee to perform their job properly. 

§    Creativity – Employee creativity should b promoted within organizations to think beyond the limits for making effective solutions for organizational problems.

     Integrity – Integrity within individuals is crucial requirement for productive workplace along with ethics, values, honesty and trust.

§    Conflict resolution – It is crucial to develop conflict resolution abilities within employees to improve workplace operations by effectively deal with individuals.

     Time Management – Time management skills are crucial for a productive workplace to maintain effective workflow to meet the customer demand (Baruch, 2006; Korsakiene & Smaliukiene, 2014).
