Difference between Headhunting and Recruitment in HRM

Introduction

Recruitment and headhunting are two different concepts although sometimes used them interchangeably. Both terms have distinct meanings and significance differences. Recruitment involves with acquiring individuals through a list of who interested job searchers for a particular job vacancy and headhunting involves with actively pursue experienced and well-qualified unique experts for a particular position (Islam, et al., 2010).

Headhunting is associated with undertaking a detailed pursuit to recognize the most suitable and perfect candidate for a specific job role in organizations without considering they are active or passive candidates (Windisch, et al., 2018). Active job seekers are searching via with professional networks and send resumes for applying job vacancies while passive candidates are presently working for an employer and not looking for new job openings. Headhunting mostly focuses on passive candidates who are unique, highly talented and working in a competitive industry or organization (Tafamel &
Akrawah, 2019)

Recruitment


 
Recruitment is the procedure of finding and fascinating the utmost fit candidates for a particular job vacancy at the right time and for a right cost. Recruitment is the process of captivating a precise person along with the desired knowledge, skills and attitudes (KSAs) for a particular job role (Devi & Banu, 2014). Recruitment is a key function of Human Resource Management Invalid source specified.. Recruitment can be undertaken internally or externally. Internal recruitment refers acquisition of employees within the organization through promotions, job posting, internal referrals etc. 

External recruitment refers acquisition of employees outside from the organizations such as advertising, recruitment agencies etc. (Islam, et al., 2010).

 Conclusion  

Although, both headhunting and recruitment are vital functions in organizations to acquire talent for organizations, there are key differences that need to understand by employers. Headhunting is linked with searching experts within a limited scope and recruitment acquires active job candidates through screening resumes. It is crucial to identify the difference between these two concepts by employers for acquiring skilled employees for organizations.

  1. While headhunting is a specialized job, recruitment is more functional in nature. Recruitment can be handled by a team of in-house recruiters or by professional recruiting firms, whereas headhunting needs the active involvement of the board of directors of the company, including the top management.

  6. Traditional recruiters look for candidates who can wear multiple hats for a variety of position. Headhunters look to fill very specific position and hence search for candidates who have more than one but highly specialized skill-sets.
